  • Essay / The Archetypal Epic of Beowulf - 1141

Too much pride is a bad thing. We can be proud, but at some point it becomes too much and prevents the mind from doing the right thing. It just becomes a matter of pride and nothing else. Greed is also a very dangerous thing. Too much greed can put someone in bad situations by doing things without thinking, just for the reward. Pride and greed must be balanced, otherwise things will turn for the worst. “The chief then rewarded the others: “Every man on the shoal who had sailed with Beowulf and risked the journey received a bounty, a precious commodity. And compensation, a price in gold, was settled for the Geat Grendel who had cruelly killed earlier,” Beowulf (1049-1054). This quote explains that all the men who were there to kill Grendel received a reward. This represents greed, because if some people know there is a reward involved, they will do whatever they can and risk a lot just for a reward. This also applies to our lives. Many people will do things they wouldn't normally do, just for fun.
