Essay / How International Travel Affects Culture - 914
International travel can allow people to exchange ideas, gain valuable life experience, and gain greater wisdom that can only be obtained during their journey. However, despite the possible benefits of international travel, it can still potentially harm countries with strong attachments to their own culture. In this case, Brunei Darussalam, as a country, places a strong emphasis on the philosophy of the Malaysian Islamic monarchy. Because the nation's philosophy plays a vital role in the Bruneian way of life, exchanging views with other countries can pose a threat to its traditional cultures, especially in the areas of language, customs discomfort as well as the environment. First of all, with international travel, people inevitably have to use international languages to communicate, which affects our first language and our second language. One of the many threats to international travel came from the need to communicate with strangers. People inevitably have to use international languages and this indirectly affects our mother tongue. Malay has become the official language of Brunei Darussalam since the Constitution of Brunei 1959 on September 29 of the same year. Although Malay dominates neighboring ASEAN countries, it is not yet recognized elsewhere. So, as people rely on foreign languages when they go abroad, it opens up the possibility for them to be bilingual. Learning another language can, however, pose a problem recognized by Wallace Lambert as “subtractive bilingualism”. Lambert (1975, 1977, 1981) expressed that even if people acquire new verbal skill, they fail to maintain their native language and therefore the idea of bilingualism is included...... in the middle paper ...... having to prioritize entertainment over greenery. Renowned activist Beard (1930) described travel as “more than just visiting tourist sites; it is a change which continues, profound and permanent, in the ideas of life”. In short, efforts to preserve our local values are not enough to eliminate the challenges of globalization. However, it is capable of minimizing the impacts of international travel on our cultures. It is up to our country to be ready to overcome the problems and try to gain as many benefits as possible by integrating the ideas gained from international travel into its national development strategies in order to satisfy every stakeholder and improve the condition of Brunei. Failure to do so has not only resulted in the loss of Brunei culture, but also future generations will not experience similar cultures that our ancestors had experienced decades ago..
