Essay / Hear My Cry - 638
Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is about an African-American family in Mississippi during the Great Depression. But this was no ordinary family. This land belonged to the family. At that time, land owned by a black family was considered a threat to white people. The Logan family and their friends often found themselves in conflict due to the severe prejudice imposed on black people. The setting of this book is very significant. If this book had any other setting, it wouldn't really make sense. The setting is Mississippi, a southern state, at a time when hate crimes were committed quite often. The Southern justice system at that time was very biased and an African American could literally be put to death for stealing a candy bar. It is also a very dramatic setting. This adds a lot of insight to all of the major conflicts in the novel. The main character of this story is Cassie Logan. She and her three brothers are going through an extremely difficult time in this story. They go through everything from little racist things to the death of a friend. Cassie's age contributes a lot to this story. Since Cassie was around 10 years old, she doesn't completely understand everything that's happening and why it's happening. This book is written in the first person so that the reader knows his thoughts and feelings, but not those of others. This allows us to better understand Cassie's inner conflicts. This book is filled with racial stereotypes, hate crimes, battles, and much more. Cassie constantly has issues with white characters. She constantly defends herself, which is not acceptable. His actions put the entire family in danger because the "men of the night" do not allow such behavior. Cassie's mother, Mary, constantly fights for a better education with ...... middle of paper ...... face. Because of this relatability, I think black people would appreciate this more than any other race. The puzzles, twists and turns are tied to the African-American community and maintain a constant connection between the reader and the characters. This book is the perfect blend of literary elements. This book has many conflicts and each one is a little more engaging than the last. This had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. It is one of the most touching and moving works of literature I have ever read. It really opens our eyes to the difficulties we don't have to go through on a daily basis. When I finished this book, all I could say to myself was, "Wow, thank God I don't have to go through that." If I had to rate this book on a 5 star scale, I would definitely give it 5 stars out of 5..
