People who live in absolute poverty have a low income and a survey was carried out on the number of families who live below the poverty line. Approximately 25 million families lived below the poverty line on less than $3,500 per year (President's Commission on Income Maintenance Programs, 1972). The majority of countries living below the poverty line are South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the West Indies, East Asia and the Pacific; almost half live in India and China alone. Additionally, some countries suffer from a lack of food supply, considered absolute poverty.
