Essay / Biology Summary: Telomeres, Telomerase and Cancer
In today's society, cancer is one of the deadliest and most widespread diseases in existence. However, new research into telomeres and telomerase is providing insight into not only the aging process and cell mortality, but also how the idea of cell death is linked to cancer cells. By gaining knowledge about the supposed immortality of cancer cells, researchers gain a better understanding of the subject and attempt to work on alternative techniques to treat the disease. The link between telomeres and cancer and its breakthrough discoveries are revolutionizing the world with potential current and future applications that have significant implications for cancer treatment, as well as for society, the economy and technology. . First, there is an unmistakable link between telomeres and cancer. , telomerase and cancer. In eukaryotic cells, chromosomes are linear, non-deviating DNA molecules1. As a result, and due to the natural technical aspects of DNA replication, small amounts of DNA are not replicated and are lost each time a cell divides1. To prevent irreplaceable and important genes from being lost and damaging the cell, telomeres, which are non-coding strands of DNA, are present at the ends of chromosomes2, 8. Telomere shortening is associated with mortality in cells; When telomeres become depleted, the coding regions of chromosomes are likely to become damaged, leading to loss of cellular functions and eventually cell death2, 8. Telomeres are produced by an enzyme called telomerase, which ceases to be fully active after development. of the embryo2. Recent research has proven that shortening telomeres paves the way for cancer, leading to gene...... middle of paper ......r, and immortality. " Young Scientists Journal January-June 2013: 9.
