Essay / American Traditions: Reunion - 1444
SummaryThis article examines American traditions, how they are established and preserved. Specifically, I discuss the traditional gatherings known as family, class, and school reunions and examine how they are augmented by social media. I remind the reader of the role that reunions play in the perpetuation of memories and the transfer of collective knowledge. Attendance at family reunions is thought to have declined in the 1990s, but is experiencing a resurgence (Baxter, 2005); This is partly due, I believe, to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. People rediscover their past and make connections, old and new. Keywords: traditions, reunions, social networksAmerican Traditions: ReunionAmerican traditions are established by our values and those values are reflected in the traditions we adhere to as families and that we carry throughout our lives. and pass it on to our children. We are part of the American quilt; our families – each block or series of quilt blocks – are linked together by the things we have in common. A quilt, unlike an Afghan, is held together with ties and knots and does not come undone; it is sewn together and when worn it is given extra stitches and it is patched. The folds of the fabric become soft, comfortable and welcoming. Tradition is a place where our children are nurtured and taught the values they will need to become effective members of American society, at the knees of generations before them. How unfortunate it is that family tradition sometimes tends to be left aside and that we quickly forget the important role it plays. How can we, as individuals, continue family traditions now? A tradition that my family has kept and which is... middle of paper... it too is in the values that we defend and which are transmitted to us. family member to another and from one generation to another. By passing down traditions and sharing them through my generation, I hope my daughter and grandson will carry on the traditions that have been passed down to me. The true meaning of a family tradition is simple: family. Keep the traditions that keep love alive and family close. Works Cited Baxter, M. (2005, June 29).
