It is located in eastern Vietnam and northern Indonesia. It consists of 7,107 islands broadly classified into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It is located between 116° 40' and 126° 34' E longitude and 4° 40' and 21° 10' N latitude. Its capital is Manila while its most popular city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila. The population is almost 100 million people. The peso is the currency of the Philippines and is the same as that of Spain because in 1543, Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos named the archipelago Las Islas Filipinas in honor of King Philip II of Spain. With the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565, the first Spanish colony in the archipelago was established and the Philippines became part of the Spanish Empire for over 300 years. This has resulted in the predominant religion in the country being Roman Catholicism. During this time, Manila became the Asian hub of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. The official language of the Philippines is English and Tagalog. However, Spanish and Arabic are also spoken. Most of the mountainous islands are covered with tropical rainforest and volcanic origin.
