One of the main branches of anthropology is cultural anthropology. Cultural anthropology is the study of human society and culture and analyses, interprets and describes cultural and social differences and similarities. A ritual is a stylized, repetitive, stereotyped, formal behavior performed carefully as a social act. Rituals take place at specific times and places and have liturgical orders. As an anthropology student, I decided to attend and observe a Bar Mitzvah. I attended this Bar Mitzvah on November 16, 2013. The event lasted approximately 6 hours. The Bar Mitzvah was held at the Country Club of Gwinnett. Participating in this ritual was very exciting and interesting for me. A Bar Mitzvah is for men only and a Bat Mitzvah is for women. Additionally, Bar Mitzvah is an important ritual celebrated in Judaism. Judaism is the monotheistic religion of the Jews, tracing its origins to Abraham and whose spiritual and ethical principles are primarily embodied in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Torah. A Bar Mitzvah would be a unique feature of Judaism because it is confined to a single culture and is not widespread. A rite of passage is "a ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person's life indicating a transition from one stage to another, such as from adolescence to adulthood." A bar mitzvah is said to be a rite of passage in Judaism as it is celebrated when a boy reaches the age of thirteen. Thirteen is the age of maturity in Judaism. At the age of thirteen, a man becomes responsible for himself according to Jewish law. At this stage of life, a boy becomes a Bar Mitzvah. Judaism is an international culture because it extends beyond national borders. Judaism being a very vast religion, its rituals and manifestations are extravagant. First, ...... middle of paper ...... ing, wear the yarmulke and find Neshama. All of these standards of Judaism are consistent with the Jewish community as a whole because other Jewish followers understand, respect, and follow these same standards. They also welcome a mature young man into their religious community. The ritual enforces and expresses these norms through the ceremony, prayer, and service that the young boy performs. In many primitive societies, some of the most complex rites of passage take place at puberty, when boys and girls are introduced to the adult world. A Bar Mitzvah is the transition process by which a boy grows into a mature young man. Incorporation is the adoption of the opinions or characteristics of others, which occurs in children as part of learning and maturation. A bar mitzvah supports this because it promotes a child's growth through learning about Judaism and moral maturation..
