  • Essay / The Case of United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc.

The Case of United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc. (1947) deals with monopolies and antitrust laws. I chose the topic of trusts/monopolies because of my interest in finance and economics. Since grade school, I have been fascinated by John D. Rockefeller's story of his oil monopoly. This story got me interested in monopolies and trusts. I started reading with pleasure about the elite who obtained their wealth illegally. After reading and watching The Great Gatsby and watching the movie Catch Me If You Can, I became fascinated with counterfeit wealth and how people were able to get away with breaking the law. My favorite thing about APUSH is learning how the economy has changed over time and how that has affected people's way of life and the power of government. This Paramount case deals with government regulation of business and how it implements the notion of free competition by attacking monopolies. I am interested in how corporate and financial laws are implemented and the extent to which government is involved in business. This case concerns monopolies in the film industry. As we learned in APUSH, the film industry was extremely popular during the 20th century and there was a lot of news surrounding this area of American life. I had initially chosen the case of Gibbons v. Ogden (1824), which also concerned monopolies, but there were no antitrust laws from that period to research. This was the first time that monopolies were challenged in court. More than a hundred years later, the monopoly of the film production industry was challenged by the same antitrust idea. The subject of monopolies and trusts even plays an important role in today's society as it shapes government regulation...... middle of paper ...... reducers brief for amicus curiae of the Supreme Court.
