There comes a time in a person's life when they have to make decisions that will have a huge impact on their life. For many, this decision involves whether or not to continue their studies. For those who decide to continue their education, they must choose which type of education is better, college or vocational education. Vocational education may be of interest to those looking for an alternative, less expensive form of education. College, the most standard form of education, gives students the opportunity to have more flexibility since a variety of careers may be open to them in the major they choose. Both forms of education have their advantages and disadvantages, while benefiting the student's future in the long run. The vocational school provides students with preparation for careers in healthcare, IT, education, business and many highly skilled occupations. Individuals have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become electricians, machinists, painters and plumbers. Some programs administer licensing or certification exams, in such programs allowing students to become eligible for employment immediately upon graduation. While many people judge job training programs, others support them and believe it is worth it. For example, Tabarrok explains that the American government pays less attention to vocational education, while in contrast Germany shows greater respect. “In Germany, students enter training and apprenticeship programs, many of which begin in high school” (Tabarrok). Although I can also become a registered nurse through vocational school, I prefer college. This gives me the opportunity to connect with other students who aren't even in my major. I also have the opportunity to discover different major disciplines. If my passion is not nursing, my exposure to different subjects may just help me find my true career. When deciding whether college or professional schools are better, there are pros and cons to consider for each. Vocational education prepares for careers but also limits students in their careers. College offers variety and flexibility, while sometimes putting the student in debt. Whatever the choice, the student opens himself up to a better opportunity for himself..
