Essay / Why are the characters alone in Of Mice and Men? - 703
Can loneliness ever bring death into people's lives? The answer to this question is yes, it is possible and it is. In fact, loneliness is often the cause of suicide. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, many characters are often alone. But this loneliness is caused by something, something that is common to everyone throughout their lives, maybe even to you! In my opinion, the definition of loneliness is a feeling that occurs naturally when there is no communication between you and someone else, or if you don't like talking to anyone. This sometimes causes people to create rage (mental and physical). It can also sometimes result in death, to yourself or someone else. So in this book what John Steinbeck is trying to say about loneliness is that people are lonely because of their physical characteristics and this involves Curley and Crooks' wife Candy. They are all alone in their own way, but have the same problem. Loneliness can be seen in many characters in this book. One of the lone characters in this book is Candy. Candy is fun, kind, happy with who she is, he also loves his dog very much, in fact his dog is the only one he has been with most of his life. But none of this makes him alone. The reason why he feels lonely is because of his physical appearance, he is old and that is the main reason that makes him lonely. “Did you see what they did to my dog tonight?” They say he was not good to himself or anyone else. When they can see me here, I wish someone would shoot me - Candy". This quote shows how Candy was so alone that he would rather have someone commit suicide than his dog, because without his dog , he is now even more alone. He is more alone than before because he is...... middle of paper...... Woman". This shows how alone she feels because she can't leave her house and talk to anyone. It's a physical feature she was born with and she'll have to live with it, but at least women had more rights than black men during that time. In conclusion, all these characters from “Of Mice and Men” are alone. their own ways. Candy is old and he has lost his only friend, his dog. Crooks is separated from society because he is black and is not allowed to be around white people. Last but not least, Curley's wife feels alone because she is a woman and she was born with it. In our society today, women have many rights, from getting a job to the right to vote. Blacks are no longer separated from whites, and our president, Barack Obama, is himself black. Additionally, older people are respected a lot because we now understand what they have been through..
