  • Essay / The mirror theory - 1610

. Explain the mirror theory and the concept of self as it relates to Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, and Prince Farquar. Your answer should address the components of self. In your answer, indicate how self-concept affects the way they communicate. Remember that communication includes cognitive, listening and speaking processes. According to mirror theory, we use others as a mirror to see ourselves and we imagine what others think of us, then include these imaginings in our self-concept. In the movie “Shrek”, the main character and hero of the story, Shrek, was always concerned about his appearance and what people thought about his face and outfit. That's why he was shocked when he thought that the princess was talking about her ugly face with the donkey and reacted very negatively to express his love towards the princess. Self-concept describes a person and their personality. A person's self-concept always affects their ability to communicate with others. When Shrek brought Princess Fiona a flower and wanted to express his feelings towards her, he overheard the entire conversation between the donkey and the princess. The princess talked about the secret why she became ugly at night. But Shrek thought she was talking about his ugly face and she didn't want to marry him for that. In this case, Shrek was simply hearing their conversation, but not listening, indicating his poor self-image. Even though the dragon breathes fire and eliminates any knight who tries to save the princess, this is no ordinary fairy tale dragon. Hanging out in the dungeon and being surrounded by boiling lava all day can make any dragon want some love. He could find the true heart of love inside the donkey and even though he couldn't speak, they communicated and expressed their love. When the donkey gave false praise to the dragon's beauty, the dragon took it as real and chased after the donkey until he could arouse true love for him in the heart of the donkey. At first, Shrek refused to take the hand of the princess, then the princess agreed to marry the stingy prince Farquar and wanted to get married as soon as possible. The greedy, short and shy king thought that Fiona loved him so much and that's why she wanted to marry keenly. But it was a problem with verbal communication and their hearts couldn't hear each other... middle of paper......ions. Explain further how Donkey's comparison of layers of perfect is not applicable to the social penetration model, nor consistent with the analogy that Shrek was making. Social penetration refers to the process of creating relational bonds by which individuals move from superficial to more intimate communication. Shrek is the fairy tale whose hero is an ugly green ogre, a constantly talking donkey as his sidekick, and a princess who turns into an ogre at night. At first, Shrek helped the donkey and as a result, the donkey tried to be his friend even though Shrek insulted him again and again. But the donkey didn't understand why Shrek tried to avoid him and liked to be isolated from social life. Everyone hated Shrek for his ugly outfit without thinking twice. That's why Shrek tried to stay away from everyone and never wanted to have any friends. But the donkey was following Shrek's every step after all of Shrek's insults and he escorted Shrek on his journey to save Princess Fiona. But in reality, if someone behaves badly like Shrek did with the donkey, he can never be friends because he turned out to be a very close friend in the end..
