  • Essay / Symbolism in Travel by Edna St. Vincent Millay - 792

In the poem, Travel states "All night no train passes, / Though the night is yet for sleeping and dreaming", (Millay) represents the continued expectation of chance mentioned above. Fear of the unknown causes these hesitations. No one can guess what is hidden in the unknown world. How can we know if it won't be a danger or an ordeal? The skeptical and loathsome attitude towards the unknown fear causes doubt and hesitation to venture into the unknown. It's surprising how many people refuse to leave their lives behind and head into the unknown. Being accustomed to current life amplifies the fear of the unknown. It also creates a fear of changing one's view of the world in which one lives. However, some can overcome this fear and be excited about what lies in the unknown.
