  • Essay / Effects of the Treaty of Versailles - 721

Germany felt that it was being singled out as the sole nation responsible for the war and strongly disagreed with the treaty. They felt like they were being treated like scapegoats. I think the chances of a second world war would have been reduced if Germany had been allowed to participate in the making of the treaty. Not being able to participate in the treaty further angered the Germans and prompted a turn to World War II. The Germans considered the treaty above all a serious insult to their nation. By 1935, Germany had violated numerous provisions and Hitler simply ignored the treaty. On September 1, 1939, Hitler and Germany attacked Poland. Not only did Americans have to deal with this, but we also had to deal with the Cold War. The treaty's greatest impact would ultimately occur when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and drew the United States into World War II. Given the reactions to the Versailles Peace Treaty, no formal peace treaty was ever concluded near the end of World War II. Overall, the Treaty of Versailles led to a short-lived peace that could have been better. Overall, this treaty was actually the first step towards World War II which would end mostly all fighting between these nations (outside of the Cold War). Even though the treaty should have been concluded in a different way, the treaty delegates had no way of knowing this and did the same thing I probably would do.
