In my hometown of Mount Prospect, Illinois (a northwest suburb of Chicago), village administrators faced several challenges in over the last decade. For example, the downtown area is rich in history dating back to the 1850s, when the train passed before the incorporation of The Villages in 1917. However, in recent years, the area has struggled to attract new businesses and maintain existing ones. Adjacent communities offer entertainment and attractions in their downtown areas that attract residents from neighboring areas; Yet downtown Mount Prospect still lacks appeal. Attempts by the Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Association have been made, with minimal success. For Mount Prospect to compete with neighboring municipalities, planners need to go back to the drawing board. Planning is a state of mind and a way of thinking. The first step is to assess the problem. Why are companies leaving? What’s stopping new arrivals from downtown? What do residents want to see in their downtown and what will encourage them to stay local rather than going to other communities? Understanding what businesses, and more importantly residents, want and need is critical to making their downtown a destination. Prospects are essential to solving planning issues such as downtown Mt. Prospect. The planner's mind must consider the problem from all angles, as there will be a variety of people with different wants and needs that must be recognized. Unlike other private sector professions, urban planners seek to achieve a higher degree of well-being for the entire community, not just paying customers. There are many directions village administrators can take to enliven the town center, planners have a variety of skills in their “toolbox” to find solutions for the communities they work on and care about. . It is not always a simple, universal and quick solution. It can take years of careful thought and preparation to achieve the desired results. Patience is a virtue in the world of planning; few things can be changed overnight.
