Many people like me in high school do not participate in clubs that help our community, which is why people question the structure and ideology of community service, wanting it to be mandatory for all high school students. A mandatory community service system for high school students will only defeat its purpose and will essentially force young people into compulsory labor and demoralize community service students. Why Community Service Should Not Be Mandatory The sole intention of community service in our current generation is to volunteer of our own free will and help the community because we want to. Reforming our school system and making community service mandatory would only change the way we view the system and would defeat its purpose. Many will say that the reason for community service is to help the community and not the benefits that come with it. Our current generation and society have shaped our view of community service because of the importance of universities. Due to the stalemate in academic achievement across the country, universities view involvement in clubs and dedication to helping your community as a way to show your leadership as an individual. If we were to impose community service on all high school students, it would just create another impasse, making it harder for universities to choose between students. More importantly, also reducing the degree of community participation, as its value has diminished. By implementing reforms and making community service mandatory, not only does it devalue community service,but it will also prevent students from wanting to help our community. When we as individuals volunteer and help according to our free will, it makes it more special and encourages us to continue. However, being forced to do something will only make us want to quit and dislike it. The same psychological principle also applies to community service. More than 60% of students are against the idea of requiring community service. Since high school students are 15 to 17 years old, if they have an unfavorable attitude toward community service, they will not do their best. With a poor community service experience to begin with, they will only be demoralized about serving the community in the future. Instead of creating a mandatory community service system, we should simply keep the system as it is and allow students to be exposed to community service through their own efforts. There are many reasons why people cannot participate in community service, so we should respect their decisions and not impose them on them. If community service requirements were to be adopted, it would only lead to people fighting the system and neglecting community service. The main reason people have proposed the idea of making community service mandatory is that many people are not exposed to it. Although some high school students would be grateful to have experienced the joy of helping the community, the loss of value of community service outweighs this. the interest in helping students gain experience. If community service became mandatory, high school students would not experience the joy and satisfaction of helping their community because they are obligated to do so, instead of wanting to do so. This would only increase the number of students who disdain community service. because it is obligatory, but also because they derive no emotional reward from completing such tasks. The best way to extend the ideology of community service is to make it optional instead of mandatory. By creating a system of mandatory community service, it would defeat the purpose of community service and would also demoralize individuals who would want to participate in helping the community. Furthermore, if we make community service mandatory, it is essentially a form of compulsory work. If we create community service requirements, the ideology of community service would date back to the mid-1900s. Instead of getting satisfaction from helping our nation, we would be forced to work for free for the government. Authors Neil Howe and William Strauss write: “The baby boomers had eliminated mandatory civic duty for their later cohorts and the generation to follow. » This is an example of how we have moved beyond the idea of “compulsory work” through the social terms of “community service”. Instead of progressing and evolving as a society, we will eliminate the goal of community service and force millions of high school students to help the community.
