  • Essay / Pros and Cons of Teachers Carrying Guns in Schools

Issues Related to Teachers Carrying Guns in SchoolsGun control is already a controversial issue; The question facing society today is: Should teachers be allowed to carry guns in school? As with most things, there are pros and cons that could arise if this is allowed. Although in some cases students need protection in schools, it is not teachers who should carry weapons; however, more security and other measures must be implemented. Gun laws are an important consideration. There are also pistols and machine guns. If a teacher were to carry a gun, it would be a handgun and an attacker could easily carry an automatic weapon. A handgun is hardly a legitimate defense mechanism against a machine gun. A machine gun can carry forty-five to sixty rounds of ammunition, while a handgun can only carry about nine rounds (Glennon). If a machine gun brought by an attacker holds that many bullets and is automatic, a pistol will do nothing unless fired first. The government is also interfering in the gun issue because of the need for gun control. “Approximately sixteen thousand two hundred and thirty-seven murders were committed in the United States in 2008, of which approximately ten thousand two hundred and eighty-eight, or 67 percent, were committed with firearms” (Agresti, Smith ). The government also has the right to pass laws that grant citizens the right to carry a firearm if one passes a background check and gun safety course. Forty of fifty U.S. states have agreed to allow people meeting certain criteria to carry firearms, and the remaining ten are undecided or completely disagree (Agresti, Smith). This shows that the population at large has the right to bear arms if the law allows it, but not teachers just because... middle of paper ... end up allowing it. Students could fall into the wrong hands, teachers could snap and put others in danger, it could ruin the child by making them nervous about just being there, so on and so forth. There are many adversities that people would have to face just to prevent something that might never happen. Does this seem worth all the heartache? Ask yourself: Is allowing teachers' guns in schools the best option for everyone's sake? There may be other, safer and simpler solutions to the problem. This world is chaotic and needs more safety in schools. True, but the mindset of allowing teachers to fend for themselves. Think about all the situations that could arise in the future or at any time if we allowed it, not just the minor point that schools need to be safer..
