  • Essay / Female Characters in Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck

Two migrant workers, George and Lennie, attempt to realize their version of the American Dream or "the ability of all Americans to achieve a better standard of living, to own a house” (“American Dream” 96). Both men are primarily concerned with owning “a little house and a few acres” and being able to “live off the fatta of the land” (Steinbeck 14). Their journey, however, is presented as more difficult than most, as Lennie struggles with mental disability and relies heavily on George for structure and guidance. Every time George and Lennie begin to settle into a job, Lennie makes a mistake, causing George to uproot his life and yell at Lennie for the way he "keeps hustling him all over the country all the time." time” ( Steinbeck 11). Although their quest for happiness and success as well as Lennie's difficulties seem to be the main conflicts of the novel, there is much more beneath the surface since the two big moves mentioned in the short story occur because of the desire of a woman.
