The Compounded Drugs ControversyPharmacy is a growing field in medicine, but it certainly involves controversial issues such as drug compounding. Although the practice of making medicines tailored to a patient seems ethical, it poses problems. Compounding drugs was the norm in the past, but over time, users began to see problems with it. Medication compounding is still present today, as some patients require medications specifically tailored to their needs. The increase in disasters has also been at the center of recent disasters, some of which occurred less than two years ago. Whichever side one takes on this issue, it is clear that compounding will be a polarizing issue in the years to come. To begin, the Professional Compounding Centers of America defines compounding as “the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients” (“What is Compounding?”). Medicine preparation has a long history, spanning hundreds of years. The University Compounding Pharmacy (UCP) states that “50% of all prescriptions were compounded in the 1940s” (“History of Compounding”). Drugstore owners, like pioneer Eli Lilly, helped compounding pharmacists enter manufacturing businesses to create medications at a rapid pace. Today, the Board of Pharmacy recognizes approximately 5,000 dispensing pharmacists, who fill 3 percent of the 4 billion prescriptions each year. The UCP has trained more than 100 compounding pharmacist technicians and 25 official compounding pharmacists. This organization is one of the largest compounding facilities in the United States (“History Of Compounding”). Moving on, preparation would be necessary if a patient wishes to change something in the medication, such as flavor or strength. It is vital that it is in the middle of paper...... eh.
