Classroom ObservationMaria and I were going to observe a social studies class in a kindergarten class that was combining their lesson with a first grade class. We were supposed to arrive at 2 p.m. When I arrived at 1:50 p.m., Maria was waiting outside the school and informed me that she had already gone in and had been told that there would be a fire drill in just a few minutes. We waited for the fire drill to end, then entered the classroom. It was around 2:10 p.m. at this time, so the teachers were a little late. When we entered the room it was empty, we had obviously pushed the students away after the fire drill. This gave us time to look around. The kindergarten room was decorated brightly with lots of posters and artwork from the students. The kids worked on colors because there was a strip above the blackboard that had the colors and the things we could see in that color. The students' desks were arranged in two rows, close together and facing each other. There were about twelve seats in each group, so there were about 24 students in the class. Apparently the class had just returned from a visit to the school library when the fire drill broke out. So when they arrived, they were still carrying their library books.
