  • Essay / Critical Analysis of the Movie The Day After Tomorrow

In the opening scene of “The Day After Tomorrow,” the characters introduced are three men named Jack, Frank, and Jason. These three men are climatologists and were on a mission to the Arctic lands to investigate. They began to dig a hole in the ground, then eventually cracked the ice floor, discovering the beginning of what Jack declares to be an ice age. Jack Hall is one of the main characters in the film, a scientist predicting the situation in the film if a super storm forms. The opening of the film is important, it introduces the main character and the beginning of the main problem. This also shows that Jack was ignored by UN officials when he later presented his environmental concerns, as he realized it was too late to react and evacuate people from danger. The story is set in modern times around 2012 and in my opinion I don't think the story would have worked if it was set in a different time as that would be moving forward to be in the future. The problem that was revealed at the beginning of the film occurred when Jack the climatologist suggested that greenhouse gas emissions could cause an ice age in about 100 years, but was ignored by the vice president because he didn't was not convinced. As they investigated further, Jack and his climate scientist partners discovered that his predictions were wrong and that it would not take decades for this to happen, but that it could only take 6 or 8 days. The weather suddenly begins to change rapidly around the world, causing massive hail in Tokyo and tornadoes destroying towns and homes in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Say no to plagiarism. Sam gradually transforms into one of the main characters having more screen time for saving his friends and weathering the storm alone. The problem Jack had to overcome was saving his son Sam who got stuck in the New York library due to a snowstorm while he was in Philadelphia. Jack and his climatologist partners Jason and Frank traveled on foot facing many difficulties such as Frank falling from the roof of a snow-covered mall, taking all three of them down with him. Because of Frank's weight and the bag full of equipment he was carrying, Jack and Jason could not bring him to the surface. Frank made the decision to cut himself from the rope that connected the three of them and rode out the wild storm with only the resources they had taken with them. The qualities that viewers see from Jack, the main character, as the film progresses are his survival skills, as he manages to stay safe and protect himself throughout the storm. Another quality is his courage, he does not want to disappoint Sam and lose his promise to save him. He also uses his thinking skills to make quick decisions that will keep him and his remaining partner safe and alive during the adventure in order to save Sam as the storm gets worse, freezing everything that comes out in the 'air. The viewer is able to feel worried and especially afraid for the characters, as they themselves have problems facing the wild weather. A twist in this film is the storm which begins with a massive wave of water that takes over and continually floods the city of Los Angeles. gradually, the..
