Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, tells the story of Oliver Twist, an orphan boy born in a workshop. He spent the first nine years in a home, then was transferred to the workhouse where his mother gave birth to him and died shortly after. Arriving in London, he meets Jack Dawkins, who takes him to the home of his contributor, Fagin, a career criminal. Oliver is sent on his first pickpocketing trip after several days of training with two other boys. Oliver is horrified to see the other two boys steal a handkerchief and runs away, eventually being convicted of theft. Mr. Brownlow, the man whose handkerchief was stolen, speaks on Oliver's behalf and takes him home, nurses him back to health. Mr. Brownlow is shocked by the young boy's resemblance to a portrait of a young woman in his home. Some time passes and two of Fagin's workers, Bill Sikes and his lover Nancy, capture Oliver and return him to Fagin. Oliver is sent flying with Sikes and shot in the arm. He is taken to Mrs. Maylie and her adopted niece Rose, the residents of the house from the attempted robbery, and is taken into care. As he recovers, Oliver takes a liking to the two ladies and stays with them in the country during the summer. But a mysterious man named Monks and Fagin are determined to take Oliver back. We learn that Oliver's mother left a golden locket which was taken by Monks and destroyed after her death.
