Over the past decade, the Army has adopted knowledge management (KM) as a means to facilitate knowledge transfer. According to FM 6-01.1, “Knowledge management (KM) is the process of enabling the flow of knowledge to improve shared understanding, learning, and decision-making (p. 1-1). » Knowledge management consists of four main areas: people, processes, tools and organization. People are a key element of KM’s success. Whether they are internal or external to your organization, they are creators, organizers and applicators of knowledge. Processes are used to influence knowledge management and are composed of the following stages: assessment, design, development, piloting and implementation. Tools are used to facilitate information sharing. The tools can consist of information systems and software. Last but least, an organization is “the matrix within which people, processes, and tools operate to integrate individual learning and organizational learning strategies (pp. 1-5). » For this article, I was tasked with identifying the systems, tools, and resources used in my organization's current knowledge management program. Recently, I conducted a survey to gather information about the Virginia National Guard's knowledge management program. I first interviewed the Knowledge Management Manager (KMO) to gain insight into knowledge management tools, knowledge management processes, and other resources used to facilitate knowledge management, communication, and the transfer of information and data within the Virginia National Guard. From this interview, I learned that among the two fundamental KM strategies (systematize and personalize), we use the systematize approach more in KM. In the systematized approach, emphasis is placed on information systems and databases to facilitate knowledge management, communication and transfer of information and data... middle of paper ... ...this interview process, I was able to see that the benefits of the current system were its ability to improve teamwork, reuse of internal knowledge, increased productivity and reduced redundancies. Some of the shortcomings/limitations of the current system included its inability to serve traditional soldiers and outside agencies such as local law enforcement and rescue. It is planned in the future to extend the service to these external agencies. On a rating scale of 1 to 5 (1 = Unsatisfactory, 2 = Satisfactory, 3 = Effective, 4 = Very Effective, and 5 = Exceptional), I rate the system 3 = Effective. Effective means that the system in place meets the objectives of the current knowledge management program. In conclusion, knowledge management is the future of the Army.
