Essay / Examining the characters and their weaknesses in Romeo...
Through the flaws in the characterization of his characters, Shakespeare allows their weakness to manipulate and cloud their judgment. This basically leads to the outcome of Romeo and Juliet, with each weakness presenting a conflict that alters the character's destiny. Particularly true with the star-crossed lovers, William Shakespeare leads their perfect love into tragedy with these conflicts. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet, Friar Lawrence, and Tybalt all contribute to the conflicts that enrich the plot. Due to destructive flaws in their characterizations, Juliet, Friar Lawrence, and Tybalt are all consequently controlled by their weakness, thus affecting the outcome of the play. Juliet's weakness in being controlled by love leads her to make ill-advised and irresponsible decisions that contribute to her choice. to end his life. Characterized as a young and reckless teenager, initially without interest in love and marriage, Juliette wants to be independent. However, after first laying eyes on Romeo, Juliet's perception of love quickly changes. Their strong love easily manipulates and clouds his judgment. Even though she is cautious and realizes that their love is too fast, the rush of feelings linked to a first love overwhelms her. Her sweet words symbolically foreshadow the journey of Romeo and Juliet's love. “Well, don’t swear. Even though I rejoice in you, / I have no joy in this contract tonight. / It is too rash, too inadvisable, too sudden;…/ This bud of love, by the ripening breath of summer, / May turn out to be a beautiful flower at our next meeting” (2.2. 117-123 ). The blooming flower is indicative of their growing love, especially Juliet. Being his first experience of true love, his actions become more and more reckless as she goes deeper, even... middle of paper... and the growing aggression leads him to fight his new unknown cousin, Romeo. Therefore, Tybalt plants his own seed of doom with his aggression. Due to self-defense, Romeo kills Tybalt and then is banished for his actions by the prince. This marks the beginning of the end of Romeo and Juliet's love. This poses the biggest challenge for the star-crossed lovers as it is their separation, and due to the strong love which they are too young to handle, they both self-destruct and commit suicide. Romeo's mother, Lady Montague, is also an innocent victim of this fight because she too dies because of her son's banishment. Tybalt's weakness and need to start a fight directly changes the outcome of the play. Works Cited Shakespeare, William. Romeo and Juliet. Ed. Stephen Greenblatt et al. The Norton Shakespeare.
