Essay / Essay on Okinawa - 888
Blue Zones: Okinawa, JapanOkinawa is a popular island located in Japan. The island is known for the health and longevity of its inhabitants. The island was once known as “the land of the immortals,” according to the article published on the Blue Zones (Okinawa Explorations) website. The age of the island's residents is well beyond what we consider old in the United States. The lifestyle of the people of Okinawa definitely plays a role in the longevity of its inhabitants. According to an article on Okinawan longevity, Okinawans reach old age by eating well, exercising, having a good attitude, tending a garden, and having a support group of family and friends (Okinawa Longevity). It can easily be said that the living rate of people in Okinawan is significantly higher than that of people in the United States. That being said, I think the American people should definitely consider adopting some of these traits in order to extend our lifespan. According to the first chapter of the book “Return to the Sources”, “Out of a population of one million, there are 900 centenarians. » (Back to basics) I think one of the very important reasons why Okinawans are their diet. Okinawans eat a primarily plant-based diet and consume foods that most closely resemble their natural state. It's a very healthy way to eat and can help prevent diseases like congestive heart failure, diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Being obese and overweight can be extremely unhealthy. The leading cause of death was heart disease in Okinawa, as well as age-related deaths (longevity). Younger generations of Okinawans are not as fortunate when it comes to health. Younger generations have become Americanized. As they became Americanized, they were able to buy the fattier foods and process them rather than vegetables. Fresh products are often more expensive and in smaller quantities. This is the culture that America faces today and it is one of the reasons why obesity and mortality are such a big problem. I really enjoyed reading and researching Okinawan culture. It is a culture and a respectful and well-lived way of life. I would definitely consider making changes in my life to be more like the Okinawans. I have already started eating more fruits and vegetables and trying to reduce the amount of fatty foods I eat. I would definitely recommend all Americans to do this. I would, however, recommend making it in smaller portions so that it is more affordable. I also think an important part of Okinawan culture is regular exercise which I have also started to include in my life..
