  • Essay / Plagiarism is morally and ethically wrong - 661

Ethnics of PlagiarismWhat do you do when you receive a five-page paper due next week or even a month after the assigned date? Do you work on the assignment as soon as you receive it or do you turn it in until the night it is due? Most high school and college students wait until that evening to work on the paper, while others will work on it as soon as they are out of class or school for the day. Waiting until the last minute will buy you time to think and work hard towards the grade you deserve. Most copy and paste certain elements just to do it faster. However, this act of taking it and passing it off as one's own and not citing the source is called plagiarism. (“Merriam-webster,” 2014)The Honor CodePlagiarism has an honor code at most universities. The Honor Code is simply many lists of codes that are considered morally right and indicate how students should behave. The Honor Code is implemented at all colleges to give students a chance to become productive students and avoid academic dishonesty. (“Wikipedia: Code of Honor,” 2013). We should all follow the honor code, not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because it is easy and morally right. We have an honor code at universities and colleges because it allows the original authors of the source to keep their work and be credited for it. Academic Dishonesty Penalty Most, if not all, colleges and universities have procedures for disciplining students by stealing work. Glenville State College will remove the student from this specific class until further notice. If found guilty, the student will receive a failure for the course or no credit on their transcript. (Glenville State College, 64)...... middle of article...... or do you think he plagiarized his thesis or cheated his partner to get his bachelor's degree? Scary, huh? Conclusion After researching and learning some surprising facts about plagiarism, plagiarism is not worth my grade or my future. I'm amazed at how many other students do the same thing. I also didn't realize that plagiarism was a serious matter, not only at my school but all over America. Students should try to take time to do their work and stay focused on school and not procrastinate. We can all help keep the honor code at the highest level by teaching by making students aware of the consequences of such an act. Plagiarism is not only morally wrong, but it also involves stealing the work of others and making it their own. It's like taking a twenty dollar bill out of someone's wallet without them knowing and calling it yours. What if it happened to you?
