The recession has caused one in eight older Millennials to move back in with their parents” (3). It's not because they want to, but because it's their only option. According to Richard Fry, senior research associate at the Pews Research Center, the total number of older Millennials living at home reached a record 21 million in 2012. Several factors are pushing them to move back in with their parents, such as the decline of 'job. rates and rising university tuition fees. Fry further states that “unemployed Millennials were more likely to live with their guardians (45%), unlike employed Millennials (29%)” (A Growing Share of Young Adults). Helicopter parents also encourage Millennials to become dependent. According to Kathryn Tyler, a Gen This gives parents control over their decisions. Millennials are dependent because helicopter parents don't allow them to learn from their mistakes. Robert Epstein, a researcher at the University of California, San Diego, says that “the most important job of parents is to help young people become independent and self-reliant. When we infantilize our young people, we stifle their development.” When parents “pamper” their children and do not allow them to think critically, then they cannot provide for themselves. Overparenting affects children's decisions later in life. They become immature and unable to make important decisions like looking for a spouse or deciding to get married. According to Kay S. People need to understand who the millennial generation is because they will soon make up the majority of society.
