  • Essay / The construction and design of a bridge - 700

Our task was to build a bridge, but not only that, it was to build an efficient bridge. For it to be an effective bridge, it had to support more weight than it weighed. We had to be able to design and build our own bridge. Both had to be good, because if either was poor our deck would not have been effective. Not only did we have to do it, but we were subject to many constraints and rules. The hardest challenge for me was that there were so many variables that I couldn't take into account; This was my first time building something similar to this. This project also had another underlying challenge: whether one was able to work well with a partner and whether one was able to choose a good partner. The challenges were complex in a way, at first glance they seemed simple, but they were actually much more difficult than expected. When I started designing my bridge, I started thinking about bridges that I had seen in real life. This didn't go very well, my memory being vague and the bridges that came to mind being completely impossible to build, I went to the Internet. I was able to find the three main bridge designs; the Pratt, the Howe and the Warren. From what I saw, I decided that the Howe Bridge was the most structurally sound. So we used this as the basis of our idea/design. We added our own touch by scattering vertical supports throughout our structure. We decided to make the side and our deck out of balsa wood and make the bottom out of Popsicle. We wanted to fortify the bottom, so we turned the Popsicle stick on its side because it was sturdier that way. With our design in hand, we were able to calculate the total weight of our structure, which turned out to be a middle of paper......over a hundred pounds, we had one of the best efficiencies with our bridge supporting more than fourteen hundred times its weight. Our efficiency has proven to be one of the best in the category. We met this challenge head on. We worked effectively with each other, which paid off because we had great efficiency. I really enjoyed this project, it was a great introduction to the other projects we will have. This gave me a good perspective on my skill level in this sort of thing. I have some suggestions on how this project could be better for future students, since this is an introductory project I have to say there shouldn't have been so many constraints. You should also try to let students choose the types of materials they want. Overall, this was a very enjoyable and educational introductory project to this class..
