  • Essay / Feminist Model Essay - 1278

Assignment 2For the purposes of this assignment, I have chosen to focus on the feminist model of ethical decision making. Corey, Corey, and Callanan (2011) define the feminist model as “the involvement of clients at every stage of the process, a strategy based on the feminist principle that power must be equalized in the therapeutic relationship” (p. 20). I believe that the feminist model is the most effective model for addressing a wide variety of ethical dilemmas because it involves the client in constructing a possible solution, thereby giving them a certain level of autonomy over their future. Through the feminist model, an advisor reduces the imposition of their values on students while validating the ethical dilemma the student faces. Some aspects of the social constructionist model are also applicable to the feminist model for facing ethical dilemmas and creating ethical decision-making interaction. Positive qualities regarding the social constructionist model focus the decision in the social context itself, not in the mind of the person making the decision (Corey et al. 2011, p. 21). However, because the feminist model would focus on the mind of the person making the decision, I would incorporate social context into conversations revolving around ethical dilemmas in higher education. The social constructionist model includes approaches to use to challenge students, including: “negotiating, consensualizing, and, as Corey et al. (2011) defines non-maleficence as follows: “counsellors avoid harm, which involves refraining from actions that may harm clients...practitioners must develop cultural awareness and sensitivity when they evaluate their customers.” (20) Being culturally aware and sensitive when assessing clients helps counselors avoid disclosing personal values that could be detrimental to the client.
