Essay / The Potential Downsides of Social Media - 970
When young people find themselves in an abandoned situation, there is always the computer and cell phone to keep them connected. Both young people and adults construct a perceived image of themselves to show it to others, hence a certain degree of stress (439-440). How much stress does it take to become a full-blown mental illness? The above research shows that it is possible for social media to have both a positive and negative effect on mental health. The diverse nature of the studies makes it difficult to determine whether social media and mental health are directly correlated: the external circumstances of the individuals involved in the study may be a major factor in mental health rather than social media itself. The results of the studies presented above indicate that social media can have both a positive and negative impact on mental health.
