Essay / Enrollment of International Students in US Universities . In this article, we would first like to highlight international student enrollment trends at U.S. universities. We will then discuss the benefits of studying in the United States. Finally, we would like to list some of the many reasons why an international student may choose a certain university. Enrollment Trends Studying enrollment trends in international student groups shows how changes in the environment and characteristics of a university will affect its total enrollment (Paulsen ). According to the Institute for International Education, the number of international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities increased 5.1 percent during the 1997-98 school year to a total of 481,280 (Honan). Fifty percent of these students enter the university as undergraduates, with the remainder entering to pursue graduate or professional studies. (edupass.org) Remarkably, fifty percent of these undergraduates are enrolled in community colleges (Backman, 1984), and according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, twice as many international students are enrolled in community colleges than ten years ago (Desruissueaux, 1998). The increase in enrollment can be attributed to many factors. William Honan of the New York Times attributes this increase in enrollment to increased recruiting abroad, the Asian economic crisis and falling community college costs. Economic factors can affect enrollment trends more than any other factor. For example, enrollment may be positively affected by a decrease in opportunities......work environment......Paulsen, MB (1990, May). Understand student registration behavior.
