Essay / The Negative Effects of Marijuana - 2479
Marijuana has a reputation for giving users a high when smoked, eaten, or inhaled through vaporization. The chemical that causes the feeling of euphoria is called Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When smoked or ingested, THC passes quickly through your lungs or stomach, then through your bloodstream and to other organs in your body. When it finally reaches your brain, THC targets specific brain cells called cannabinoid receptors (Harding, 2013). These receptors are particularly found in the parts of your brain that control your memory, thinking, pleasure, concentration, perception of time, and coordinated movements. Users will experience changes in their mood, have difficulty solving problems, and will definitely have difficulty learning and remembering. These are just some of the health problems that marijuana can cause to your brain. In addition to damaging your brain, marijuana causes a wide range of mental and cardiopulmonary health problems. Much like tobacco, marijuana can cause significant irritation to the lungs and possibly cause breathing problems. With all the smoke passing through the lungs, regular users can eventually experience coughing, phlegm, frequent lung illnesses, and an increased risk of developing lung infections. Another risk to consider is how marijuana can affect your heart. After the first hour of smoking, users will experience their heart rate increasing to 20 to 100 beats per minute (Harding, 2013). The risk of heart attack may increase, especially in older users. However, not only does marijuana affect your heart and lungs, but your risk of mental illness will also increase. Marijuana has been linked to problems such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, lack of motivation, and the middle of an article. It has been a major topic of discussion over countless years. People's opinions on legalization vary by generation, culture, age, gender, ideologies, experiences, etc. Time has shown that marijuana is good in some ways and bad in others. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether they are for or against cannabis use. Would it be possible to live in a time where people can smoke, eat, drink, wear and more with this herb? Maybe people should put aside their own agendas and see where Washington and Colorado can take us. This is a new generation for America and people want to be heard. Businesses selling recreational marijuana could be what the United States needed to slowly restart the economy. And if Guam manages to get the issue of medical marijuana on the ballot, we'll see what the citizens of Guam really think about it..
