  • Essay / The Fight for Social Justice - 908

It has been proven that often the fight for social justice and the common good comes at a high cost to those involved. Through writings such as Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and Sophocles’ “Antigone,” as well as lectures such as Dr. Colbourn’s lecture “Confronting History and the Good Life: Life after Rosewood” , it is demonstrated how life, liberty and normal daily life suffer from the fight for social justice and the common good. To begin with, Dr. Martin Luther King along with many other African Americans fought for equality, social justice, and a better life for African Americans, which comes at a very high cost. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was ridiculed and the target of numerous attacks simply for attempting to exercise his free speech and right to protest. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested a total of 30 times during his life. When he wrote his famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” Dr. King was placed in jail while peacefully protesting because Birmingham authorities claimed he was “marching without a permit.” The fact that he was arrested 30 times proves that Dr. King was not afraid to risk his freedom in his fight for a better life. Not only Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, but also that of his family, changed during his fight for social justice and the common good. Her children never had the chance to live a normal childhood. His family served as an example to the black community and a target for racist people who opposed his actions. His family also traveled extensively. In the “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” Dr. King explains how he was called to Birmingham, Alabama, from Atlanta, Georgia, by affiliates of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to assist him…. .. middle of article..... .lbourn, Dr. David.
