Essay / How to overcome difficulties in life
Over the years, people encounter many difficulties in their daily activities. Whether big or small, we must strive to overcome these difficulties. In my previous English class, it was required to write an essay based on a passage and prompt provided by the State Department. The materials provided could be of any genre and at any level of difficulty desired. Writing about certain topics, like science or history, has always been a challenge for me, and based on previous state tests, informative science articles make up the majority of passages chosen for the test. Writing an essay for the state exam was a difficulty that I overcame by carefully reading the material, strengthening my vocabulary, completing practice essays, advancing my writing conventions, and skillfully organizing the essay. The provided passage and prompt helped give me clear instructions on the topic of the essay; When planning the essay, I read the prompt first, then began reading the passage. I paid close attention to the key points mentioned in the prompt; the key points of the prompt helped me write a well-written essay. I used these comprehension skills to ensure that a small, but important, detail was not overlooked. Throughout the year, I strengthened my vocabulary by taking weekly vocabulary tests on unknown words. The words I learned helped describe a wider variety of knowledge gained in the essay. Learning and applying higher vocabulary words helped me improve my overall test score; lassitude, laconic, adduce and mordative are just a small part of the many vocabulary words I learned last year. The vocabulary words I learned also helped me answer vocabulary questions and decipher unknown words in passages on the multiple-choice section of the state test. Additionally, strong vocabulary helped me express a higher sense of intelligence in the essay. Taking practice tests helped give an idea of what the state test would have looked like. Several passages of various genres were presented in the above-mentioned practical tests; writing on many different topics has helped me prepare for many types of essays. Practice essays helped me become a better writer for the future. I strived to write practice essays that focused on topics I struggled to write about, like science or history. While being exposed to the many types of essays I could write, I also strengthened my writing conventions by viewing many organized essay examples. I learned how to use punctuation, such as commas, colons, semicolons, dashes, and hyphens, in a more advanced way. I strengthened my skills on the difference between homophones – like and also – and how to use them correctly. By doing these things, it helped me strengthen my spelling on often misspelled words like many, government, and definite. The writing conventions that were skillfully reinforced helped me write a more advanced essay than others. Organizing an essay correctly was beneficial to writing a successful essay. Before my previous English class, I organized the essays in an unsystematic way. Each time an essay was written, it was never in the same order. There.
