Milgram told the participants that if the question was answered incorrectly, they were to administer an electric shock of increasing intensity as punishment to the individual who gave the wrong answer. However, this was a deception since the subjects of the experiment were in fact the people delivering the electric shocks. (Simply Psychology, 2007).
