Even though Alabama's sexual predator laws are considered strict, that does not negate the fact that sexual predators often steal from innocent victims. which are never found. Additionally, these sexual predators seek out the most vulnerable people in society to sexually assault them. Alabama's laws seek to mitigate the risk that predators often return to a predatory lifestyle even after prison. Technology has only served to improve the ability of sexual predators to contact their victims privately through chat rooms and other social networks. The term sexual predator itself is somewhat confusing and the term varies from state to state. However, the term generally refers to sexual misconduct that society has deemed deviant. As suffices to mention, the term sexual predators is generally a “derogatory term for a person attempting to initiate or initiating sexual contact with another person in a “predatory” manner. It is most often used in reference to pedophiles who prey on innocent children, but can refer to any other sexually vulnerable group, including the mentally disabled and the elderly” (Segen's Medical Dictionary, 2011). This article will examine Alabama state laws that govern what behavior is considered predatory and the state's approach to sexual predators. Additionally, the original laws and any revisions to said laws will be analyzed to evaluate what is considered predatory in Alabama. The penalties imposed by the laws will be examined as well as the discretion of judges in the sentencing process. The activity necessary for prosecution to pursue the case, such as a simple solicitation or an actual physical interaction, will also be discussed. In the last part of the article, this author's opinion will be given regarding sexual predators in Alabama... middle of article...... immense amount of sex crimes, law helps to monitor the activity of sexual predators in a way that assists in the monitoring of offenders. The law further provides mandatory minimum sentences of 20 years in prison for sex offenders convicted of Class A felonies and 10 years for Class B felonies.
