Essay / Analysis of the speech of infamy - 629
Aditya “The speech of infamy and the speech of September 11” America has been hit by two terrible tragedies. September 11 and Pearl Harbor. Franklin Roosevelt and George W Bush, two American presidents who served during the war, aimed to create a sense of loyalty in their speeches "The Infamy Speech" and the "9/11 Speech" through the ethos, pathos and logos. We see how each of these men took action in the face of this attack on America. George tries to take control of it as calmly as possible. George quotes: “Immediately after the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our army is strong and prepared.” (American Rhetoric 1) George is in control and on the ball here. He knows America is under attack. One question that needs to be answered is that during this tragedy he was in an elementary school. When he learned there was a terrorist attack, why didn't he take action and help America like he said in his speech? FDR took a different approach to the situation. He quotes “As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have ordered that every measure be taken for our defense” (Eagles Free Enterprises 1). It's very simple and straightforward. It took him less time to respond to the public than it took George W. Bush, as his speech stated: "Indeed, an hour after Japanese air squadrons began bombing Oahu , the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal response to a recent American message. Although this response indicated that there seemed no point in continuing ongoing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threats or hints of war or armed attack. launched a sneak attack on U.S. forces stationed in Hawaii, killing more than 2,400 troops and civilians and injuring more than 1,000 others - Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress and called on lawmakers to authorize a declaration formal war against Japan. Less than an hour after the above speech, the United States had officially entered World War II, the deadliest conflict in human history. » (HuffingtonPost 1) This is an example of the power of the attacks that day. Even George W Bush quotes: "And I was sitting outside the classroom, waiting to go in, and I saw a plane hit the tower -- the television was obviously on, and I had the I used to fly myself, and I said, "There's a terrible pilot." "And I said, 'It must have been a horrible accident.' But I was taken there – I didn't have much time to think about it. (Search 9/11)
