Essay / Students' Discussion of Physical Activities - 1661
IntroductionThe aim of this research study was to identify the student's perception in the involvement of physical activities through their study. In this chapter, the study will explain the topic of this study based on the previous case study, review and thesis related to this topic. The purpose of this study is to review research related to the theoretical framework of student participation.Physical ActivitiesThe discussion regarding student participation in physical activities is based on Student Participation: A Developmental Theory for Higher Education , a theory proposed by Alexandre W. Astin. The theory is applied to the field of study carried out with emphasis on the degree of physiological and psychological participation of students in physical activities. According to Astin, involvement has the same definition as motivation, but it only differs in its scope, because psychologically it has the same weight. This theory serves as support for the more discussed literature reviewed in this section, which argues that students' involvement in physical activities itself is based on how the student's resources affect the consequences of their involvement in a related activity (Astin, 1984). These resources may be available leisure time, facilities and others. However, in this study, only the availability of facilities is considered as a control factor because there is a large difference in access to facilities among the student sample. When it comes to physical activities, there are two main types of physical activity:; exercise or sport. The two are two different terminologies; exercise is a physical activity performed for the sake of health and fitness, and sport is an activity involving physical effort and skill in which a ...... middle of paper ...... is suitable to the environment. (Edward L. Deci, 2008) Sarah's study focuses on a leisure time sample, to determine the extent to which they are motivated to engage in physical activity when free, highlighting the importance to maintain a good image when one is not affected by barriers. this prohibits them from being active. Results based on appearance report the highest level of extrinsic motivation, particularly among those who view appearance as a necessity rather than conformity (Sarah McLachlan, 2010). As motivation is grouped according to type, these types are assumed to be related to culture - as different citizens, have different culture. However, when viewing this from the perspective of basic needs as an overall motivation, a wider range of contingencies is obtained because the similarity of the human need for competence and relatedness is deemed acceptable in almost all cultures (Edward L. Deci, 2008).
