  • Essay / Analysis and commentary on Bill Gates' article: How...

After reading Bill Gates' article "How to fix capitalism", I completely agree with the different ideas stated by Bill Gates and I believe that capitalism can and should be an effective way to make the world as a whole better. In the following essay I will attempt to explain the current situation, to explain some of the context that brought us to this situation, to outline what a government can try to do to help rectify the situation, to develop possible systems that can incentivize businesses to help and finally an example of how businesses can start to help. Creative capitalism is an effective way to increase the well-being of humanity as a whole and should be encouraged. It is the richest of humanity who see the most improvement, and the poorest of humanity who see the least. Thanks to capitalism, the world has changed enormously in a short time. Many new technologies have been innovated, especially in the last 100 years. Humanity as a whole is doing much better than before. For example, most of us are able to fly from one country to another in a day or have fairly easy access to advanced healthcare. In a nutshell, as Bill Gates said in his article “How to Fix Capitalism,” “Capitalism has improved the lives of billions of people – something that is easy to forget” (Gates). But the situation is not improving fast enough, and it is not improving for everyone. A multitude of people live on less than a dollar a day and it can be extremely difficult for a person in such a situation to climb out of poverty without help from others. Capitalism has the capacity to exploit self-interest in useful and sustainable ways, but only behind the scenes...... middle of paper ...... inside -- this type of innovation makes a huge difference. You are less tempted to steal if you don't carry cash. (Gates) In conclusion, creative capitalism is already happening and doing its best, but there is so much more to do. Many companies forget that the poorest two-thirds of the world's population alone have around $5 trillion in purchasing power. Governments can also help by investing in creating more creative incentives. They can also ensure that companies get publicity for their good work, to shine a light on those who help others. Customers of these companies can help by purchasing products from companies that help society. If more companies follow the lead of the most creative organizations in their industry, they will have a huge impact on some of the world's worst problems, and together we can bring about change for the better..
