  • Essay / Comparing and Contrasting Myths - 767

A myth is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning a hero or event. IN some cases, myths are very similar in that their subjects or morals have similar content, for example Prometheus and the story of Buddha. Prometheus is the story of one of Zeus's sons who would always think about the future and what was to come. The story of Buddha is the story of a prince born in northern India who was in search of happiness. Prometheus and Buddha have many character traits that contribute to the way these myths are portrayed, but they act in different ways for different reasons. As a result of these actions, Prometheus and Buddha come face to face with a conflict that could bring them down or make them rise. Overall, in both of these myths, a theme is present. In both stories, the theme or moral revolves around selflessness and helping others. Prometheus and The Story of Buddha are two myths that can easily be compared and contrasted by looking at the character traits, the conflicts the characters face, and the themes or morals of the myth. Prometheus always thought about the future and never truly lived for the moment. He was very empathetic and selfless as he only thought of others rather than himself. He was also very courageous and determined because even though Zeus refused to provide fire to men of lesser quality than them, Prometheus still betrayed his father to help men in need. On the other hand, Buddha was a kind and intelligent man, loved by many. He was just as curious and determined as Prometheus, but he was committed to finding happiness for himself and his family. Even though Buddha also sought happiness for his family, this act was rather selfish compared to Prom...... middle of paper ...... who is kind to people yet, Prometheus is of a more noble nature. These two characters face conflicts that result from their actions, as Prometheus is punished for stealing. Buddha is attacked by evil while trying to find his own happiness. Ultimately, both stories teach us to fight for our beliefs and believe in what we can do with our own skills and advantages. Personally, I think Prometheus is a better myth because it represents a better moral for readers. This teaches them self-confidence and encourages them to fight for what they believe is right. It's also a little history lesson that represents a religion in how some people believe fire was given to humans. After reading these two myths, I compared and contrasted them by looking at the character traits, conflicts the characters face, and the theme or moral presented in the myth..
