  • Essay / Leadership Roles in Remember The Titans

Remember the Titans is a movie released in 2000. It depicts a group of guys who were on a high school football team in the 1970s. It begins during a funeral, and like any other funeral, everyone is dressed in black, flowers everywhere, a coffin in the center of the crowd, sobbing, and a close-up of a girl with bright blonde hair. She is the narrator. It's 1971 at TC Williams High School in Alexandra, Virginia. An African American, Herman Boone, was hired as the head coach of this high school. Remember that this was a time when segregation was still popular. He was assigned a white assistant coach. His name was Bill Yoast and was most recently the high school head coach. This high school, like many other high schools in the area, was filled only with white kids. Boone also turned down the assistant coaching job, but was basically threatened by white players with a boycott if he didn't coach. He takes this position so that the players do not lose their scholarships either. With Boone as head coach, he brought in an entire team of African-American student/athletes. About a week later, the African-American players attended a meeting in the high school gymnasium. There, the white players interrupt the other players and launch into a fiasco of racial insults. As this descends into chaos, the group eventually splits up and the players are flogged. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why Violent Video Games Should Not Be Banned”? Eventually the team returns home where things start to happen. Titan season is on and unstoppable. They ended up going 10-0 and winning a state championship. Their quarterback is unfortunately the victim of a car accident which paralyzes him from the waist down. About 10 years later, he had another car accident and unfortunately ended up passing away. The film ends with the entire crew present at the funeral singing “na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye”. Remember, the Titans play many leadership roles throughout the film. Coach Boone played the lead role in leading the team to become a team. Coach Yoast was hesitant at first, but he took a cue from Boone and helped lead the team. Another group of leaders who played an important role in the film were the captains, the seniors, who played a role when the coaches were not around and set the tone for the season. In conclusion, Remember the Titans features many leaders in the film who represent the true meaning of leadership..
