    “The pendulum of the mind swings between meaning and nonsense, not between good and evil” (Carl. Jung). A man is inclined to believe what he desires and act in the way that suits him best, even if it is perceived as unfair. The distinction between good and bad behavior can otherwise be defined as morality. The belief that morality is always considered good is an easy mistake. On several occasions in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the moral codes conveyed through the two main characters are not always positive. The grandmother and the Misfit adopt behaviors motivated by personal values. In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find", an individual's morality is reflected in their actions, as opposed to how they are perceived or how they perceive themselves. This is obvious whether or not a character stays true to their morals. “In most Southern Gothic stories, there is a central character or loved one who is separated from the world by a disability or a strange way of seeing the world. » (Pearson 1). “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a great example of Gothic literature. In this story, the Misfit's actions are seen as abstruse and unethical to the reader. His actions mainly depend on what he believes. Man does not react to a certain situation; he simply goes through the same thought process as he would anything else. This is highlighted when he states, “I forget what I did, ma'am. I sat there, sitting there, trying to remember what I did and I can't remember it to this day. Every now and then I thought it would come to me, but it never did. " (O'Connor 113). As the Misfit responds to the grandmother, he says he doesn't remember what...... middle of paper ...... expose their true code moral regardless of how they perceive themselves or how they are perceived by others. The grandmother's morals fluctuate throughout the story while the Misfit's moral code remains consistent. Connor allows the reader to analyze the behavior of the grandmother and the outsider.
