The film first takes place on a ship, La Amistad, where illegal slaves were taken from Africa and shipped to the Americas to become slaves. The first scene shows a brutal and bloody revolt among the Africans who kill all members of the crew except two gentlemen. The two gentlemen made the slaves believe that they were taking them home, when in reality they were heading towards the eastern United States.
