The obesity epidemic in our society is a growing problem that affects more than half of the population. The two main medical problems associated with obesity are diabetes and the cardiovascular system. Since 2010, these problems have been resolved and change is a major concern for the government. Obesity, especially in children, is not the problem. However; the cause of childhood obesity is the real problem. Many people claim that fast food restaurants are to blame. I believe it's not just the fast food restaurants' fault; instead, there are socioeconomic, racial, and poverty issues that have much more to do with obesity than just fast food. Banning fast food is not the cure, not only would it hurt the economy, it is a matter of personal responsibility. Everything's OK in moderation, the Nutrient Profile Index (NPI) and the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) are institutes that ensure the fast food industries deliver the healthiest meals possible. Since 2010, there has been concern about the potential negative effects of fast food marketing on the diets of children and adolescents. More than a third of young people consume it, including 33% of children (11 years old) and 41% of adolescents (12-19 years old)7, compared to 36% of adults who consume fast food. Furthermore; a quarter of teen visits to fast food restaurants were for an afternoon snack, which is much higher than all other age groups. Consumption of fast food increases daily calorie intake by 126 calories for children and 310 calories for adolescents, as do sugary drinks, total sugar, saturated fat and sodium. Objective, transparent data is needed to assess restaurants' progress in reducing marketing that promotes unhealthy fast food consumption by children and adolescents. The fact is, that's just McDonald's and all the other fast food restaurants and how many people they employ across the country. The fast food industry is a necessity for our economy. It doesn't matter who or what group tries to blame obesity or childhood obesity or cardiovascular disease or anything else on fast food; it's safer than alcohol and cigarettes.
