The effects caused by earthquakes are devastating. They cause loss of life and have effects on infrastructure and the economy. Earthquakes can occur anytime and anywhere. On January 12, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck Haiti. An estimated 316,000 people were killed and more than 1.3 million Haitians were left homeless (Earthquake Information for 2010). Haiti was plunged into terrified chaos. After the earthquake, families were separated as many members were killed. Homes, schools and hospitals have been demolished. People lost their most precious possessions. It will take time for the country to recover from this terrible disaster. Long-term damages are economic, health and environmental problems that affect the beautiful island of Haiti. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. Agriculture is one of the people's incomes. But everything changed after the earthquake of 2010. The losses caused by the earthquake were between 8 billion and 14 billion dollars (earthquake in Haiti). Unemployment, lack of nourishing land, lack of drinking water further affected the economy because people chose to emigrate to other places to work, such as in the Dominican Republic (earthquake in Haiti). Furthermore, "Haiti went from a Republic of Non-Governmental Organizations to a Republic of Unemployment" and, to achieve economic growth, Haiti needs business investment that can help many people find jobs. Companies such as Royal Oasis create hundreds of jobs for many Haitians.
