Essay / Religion In Joan of Arc - 1282
Since the very beginning of the Christian Bible, there have been problematic writings. The two creation stories, the Elohist and the Yahwist. The first affirms that God created man and woman at the same time and in his image. The latter suggests that God created woman from a man's rib. This Yahwist creation story forces women to play a subordinate role to men. Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote about this in her book The Woman's Bible. She also says that "[t]he Bible cannot be accepted or rejected as a whole, its teachings are varied, and its lessons differ greatly from one another," which explains why it is virtually impossible to get people to ignore the second misogynistic story (Stanton 13). ). People take the Bible literally and often seem blind to the contradictions in the stories which can be very dangerous, like this one.
