Essay / The Red Lake Massacre - 1501
School shootings have become more frequent in recent years in the United States. After the Columbine High School shooting which left 15 dead; another tragedy occurred just 1,000 miles away six years later. This tragedy soon became known as the Red Lake Massacre, which would later become one of the deadliest school shootings since the Columbine shooting. The shooting received widespread media coverage due to the discovery that the tragedy was planned in advance and that the attacker suffered from a lack of social connections. When I reviewed the findings of the Red Lake Massacre, I came to the conclusion that the offender lacked major social connections in his life. Social bonds that included family attachment, community involvement and even school involvement. It is difficult to understand an offender's motivations when he or she is not present or alive to provide explanations, but explanations can be provided as to why the violent event may have occurred. In this article, I will discuss in detail the Red Lake High School shooting, how Travis Hirschi's social control theory explains the massacre, and the media and societal perspectives of the tragedy. On Monday, March 21, 2005, a 16-year-old boy named Jeffrey Weise opened fire on his grandfather, his grandfather's girlfriend, students and staff at the high school in Red Lake, and ultimately committed suicide. Weise's rampage began with the killing of his grandfather, Daryl Lussier, 52, and his grandfather's girlfriend, Michelle Signa, 32, early Monday morning, before heading to the high school from Red Lake. Lussier was “a veteran sergeant with the Red Lake Police Department” (Maag 2005: 4), who owned a “.40 caliber.” handgun and 12 gauge shotgun” (Magg 2005: 4) located inside the house. From the middle of the previous document...... When such an event like this happens, it is very difficult to know what to do next. As a society in general, after the massacre, the Red Lake Massacre became national news due to the simple fact that it happened in a small town and Weise was a teenager who faced many problems growing up. Weise's actions attracted significant media coverage because he was a teenager who had been diagnosed with depression and suffered from suicidal thoughts. After extensive investigation and interviews, journalists found evidence that the shooting was planned in advance. Works cited by CNN. 2005. Journal. March 23, p. 1-3.
