The Four Metaparadigms of NursingPatient The first defining concept of the nursing metaparadigm is the patient also known as human beings or people (Butts, 2015). This concept is what nursing is all about. Individuals as a whole experience wellness and illness at some point in their lives and seek medical care. Nursing is defined as providing care to individuals and helping them meet their health care needs. The patient must be at the center of all care provided. Each patient is different and requires individualized care. Health care should focus specifically on individual needs and incorporate the patient's thoughts and ideas. Each patient must be at the center of their own care and trained by nurses to be proactive. Taleghani, Alimohammadi, Mohammadi, and Akbarian (2013) define nurses as caring individuals who respond to the needs of individuals. In fact, nurses care for people of varying ages, with specific needs, requiring them to not only provide care, but also provide individualized care. Rahim (2013) reports Nightingale's definition of a nurse as a person who recognizes patients in need and helps them achieve the desired state of health. Therefore, nurses must be multifaceted individuals with appropriate education and clinical training. Through their many caring acts, the nurse must be diverse and knowledgeable about various cultures, clinically competent and up to date with the most recent scientific research. They can act as a mentor, educator, confidant, support system, and clinically competent person at any time (Taleghani et al., 2013). A nurse possesses all of these qualities and works in a variety of settings in collaboration with other medical providers to promote health and well-being and improve the quality of life of individuals. An example of this includes nursing in the emergency department. Here, nurses are people trained to provide medical care to people of different ages suffering from various illnesses. They must also collaborate with numerous interdisciplinary teams to promote the best possible outcome for their
