  • Essay / Class and Inequality Essay - 1286

Pierre Bourdiey was a French sociologist who contributed greatly to studies related to class and inequality. Domination in societies and its functioning constituted its main problem. He was unable to understand why people accept inequalities in their communities and live according to the rules of those in power without questioning them. There were four factors regarding his study which were habitus, domains, social capital and cultural capital. Habitus refers to the way we are today, based on how we grew up, the situations we faced, and the people who helped deal with those situations growing up. A person's habitus is permanent and it affects people you know and don't know in both positive and negative ways. If one knows his own habitus, he is able to achieve things that he had never imagined before and show excellent results when working with a group of people. Society is divided into several areas, which refers to independent spaces where one works with its difficulties and challenges. For example, we can ignore the actions we perform in a given area, but in each area we try to achieve the best possible position. People who have high social capital have good relationships with influential and powerful people. Additionally, they are good at networking and know the ideal people who could help them in some way in their life. For example, one can get top grades in college, but without a proper network, one would have difficulty searching for a suitable job. On the other hand, people with cultural capital are aware of all the good information available and acquired mainly through education and family. These are the things that p...... middle of paper...... other ways such as fakes or copied products and buy those which are much cheaper. They want to look good and want that prestige and reputation when people see one in a Louis Vouitton belt or wallet. In the past, people looked at the fabric first before buying anything, but today it is no longer about quality, but about price. Clothing company producers want to make profits and reduce production costs. Styles and trends change every week in some stores to increase profits and force the consumer to buy gradually. Therefore, Bourdieu's theory can be used in fashion today because people want to look prestigious and want that status and reputation by wearing expensive clothes, but for those who cannot afford it, look for fakes because of their budget to get the same respect and rank among the rich people.
