Essay / Binary oppositional logic
In class, we discussed binary oppositional logic and how it affects our daily lives. In my own terms of binary oppositional logic, binary opposites mean a concept or idea that can only be clearly understood by comparing it to its difference from something else or something opposite. For example, the meaning of masculine cannot be understood without feminine. Since we were babies, we have been taught good/bad, hot/cold, smart/dumb, left/right, on/off, and so on endlessly. Our knowledge depends on oppositional binaries to understand the world around us. The concept of poor might not exist without understanding the concept of rich. Say no to plagiarism. The two binarisms I would like to discuss in my article are good/bad and same/different. At first, I was a little hesitant to choose these two oppositional binarisms. But I realized the impact of these two binary oppositions on my entire life. I was born the youngest son of an older sister and brother. My older brother, Matthew, is severe and autistic. Matthew is different. He is not behaving normally. The autistic world he navigates is different from that of normal people. Most of my life has been focused on how his different and bad behaviors have affected my life. Matthew can be quite loud and nervous in public places such as restaurants and stores. This behavior typically subjects my family and me to unwelcome comments or scrutiny from others. Normal and good behavior in public would normally require calm voices and calm walks. His loud voice and agitated movements were always considered bad and inappropriate in public places. Since I was little, I was always taught what good and bad behavior is. Of course, good behavior has always been the dominant binary system that is the standard that everyone should adhere to. This has been the norm throughout history. The good and normal will prevail over the bad and different. This can also be seen in reading "Fugitive Flesh: Gender Self-Determination, Queer Abolition, and Trans Resistance" Eric A. Stanley states: ""well experienced people" have changed their appearance from transgender to "gender appropriate clothing ". to avoid being captured or questioned by police during the 1969 New York raid” (Stanley 2015 page 1). Bad and different behaviors are the subordinates I must avoid and hide in order not to get in trouble. The dominant binary of compliant, good, and normal behaviors must be enforced daily to avoid criticism and alienation from parents, peers, teachers, and strangers. For example, in the reading “Remove Your Gender Binary from My Childhood,” Jane Ward states, “As soon as we call this child a girl, we invite the world to see a pretty princess and pretend that she is who he is.” where she always was. » (Quartier 2012, page 3). The normal understanding expected of girls is generally considered to be wearing frilly dresses and playing with dolls. We are all taught this from a young age and everything else is considered different or wrong. Girls having “different” sexual preferences or playing soccer are bad or inappropriate behaviors for that gender. In the same way, my brother also had to behave in a.
